Megan Aroon Duncanson - Artist Statement

I am a self taught contemporary artist, living out my dream of being able to
create beautiful art as a profession

As long as I can remember I have been drawn to art and have always had a
pencil or brush in hand.

I am constantly trying to find my own unique space in a sea of artists. It is a
daunting task, but I think with my new style of art, as seen on the pages of this
website, I have finally found MY place. It's exhilarating and inspiring to feel as
though I'm doing something totally new and different.  A style that I can grow
with and explore all matter of subject and color.

I have endless ideas spinning through my mind, but not enough time to put
them all on paper or canvas; such a shame life is so short,  but, I am trying to
make the most of what little time I have to express myself artistically, and reach
out to others with my art.  I am a highly prolific Artist and produce literally
hundreds of paintings in a single year.  The more I paint the more prolific I
become.

I draw my inspiration from nature and everyday subjects around me. Living in
one of the most remote places on the planet, the Bush of Alaska, as well as
tropical paradise, Hawaii and Florida, has allowed me to use many different
aspects in my art to inspire me.  It can be trees, boats, birds, vibrant sunsets,
water, palm trees, cities, martinis; anything I see around me can be used  to it's
fullest extent to draw the viewer into each piece and provide them with an
enriching and pleasurable experience.   I strive for my art to have an element of
surprise, and at the same time, effect each person on a personal level with
elements that they can relate to from their own life-experiences.

The closest style I feel my art fits into is a mix of Contemporary Eclecticism and
Pop.  And yet, it is different and unique in it's own way, which is refreshing, and
full of light and laughter.  My goal as an artist is to bring happiness and joy into
people's lives through art.  If every time someone looks at my art and it makes
them smile, I know I have achieved part of my dream and purpose in life.

I hope you will feel a connection with the art on this website and share your
feelings and emotions evoked by my art.  Please feel free to send me your
comments and feedback via my
COMMENT page.

All the Best,
Megan
Megan Aroon Duncanson Bio

  • Born:  1972, Bellingham, WA
  • Grew up:  Alaska
  • Education:  UCF, Masters-Political Science (1999)
  • Current Residence:  Alaska

I grew up in the bush of Alaska near the small fishing village, Meyers Cuck.  We didn't have any of the modern amenities
most of us take for granted. The only way to get where I lived was by boat or float plane, there were not (and still are not)
any roads. The only source of electricity was individual generators. Our only source of heat was provided by wood burning
stoves (there was a lot of firewood to be cut and stacked!) My family didn't have phones or cable TV, it was roughing it at
it's best!

After I graduated from High School in Ketchikan, Alaska, I decided to go somewhere warm, and headed off to college in
Hawaii on the island of Oahu.  I attended the private College, Hawaii Pacific University from 1990-1992.

Around that time I was feeling foot loose and fancy free and decided to do a little traveling.  I ended up taking a bus cross
country until I reached Orlando, Florida.  Of course it had to be somewhere warm, I'm addicted to the heat!  I attended
Valencia Community College for a semester and then ended up back in Ketchikan, Alaska to give birth to my only child,
Aroon Melane in 1993.  After she was born I moved back to Florida and married my husband Robert in 1995.

Over the next four years, I finished my Bachelor, and Master's degree in Political Science with an emphasis on Gender
Theory and International Relations.  I received my degree's from the University of Central Florida.  In addition to receiving
my degree's I was also selling my art through local galleries and shows.  I also helped my husband run a lucrative custom
home building business (I was a licensed Residential Contractor) until 2007 when we decided to leave the area and move
to Ketchikan, Alaska.  I know - it's cold here!!  But, we saw the imminent down-turn in construction and the Real Estate
market, and wanted to get out while we still could.

Over the course of my life I have always painted and sold my art.  As each year passes, I gain more and more collector's
and international acclaim.  I am currently devoting myself full-time to my art career, and being a wife to my husband
Robert, and mom to a very active 15 year old volleyball player, who just happens to be considered in the top five
Freshman volleyball players in the State of Alaska!  Yes, I am a proud mom :)

I know I won't always be settled here in Alaska, my husband and I look forward to a future where we are able to travel and
see more of this beautiful world.  We will, however, always come back to Alaska every year.  We have a cabin in the remote
community of Meyers Chuck, where we go every summer to enjoy the raw nature and beauty that can only be found in
Alaska.  Besides, the summer's are INSANELY Beautiful in Alaska!  But, the world holds so much more to see and do, I
look forward to the next 40+ years of adventure traveling, exploring our earth, and getting lot's of inspiration for new
paintings.
